Trump Claims to Have Secured GOP Backing for Crypto Bills

Trump rallies Republicans to support the GENIUS Act and other crypto bills, addressing CBDC concerns ahead of a crucial House vote this week.
Trump Claims to Have Secured GOP Backing for Crypto Bills

US President Donald Trump said that he has convinced nearly all Republican members who had previously opposed three key crypto laws to support them in an impending House vote on Wednesday.

After meeting with 11 of the 12 dissenting legislators, Trump announced on Truth Social that they had decided to move the legislation forward. These include the stablecoin-focused GENIUS Act, the Anti-CBDC Surveillance Act, and the broad-reaching CLARITY Act.

Previously, 13 Republicans withheld their support, primarily wanting a direct ban on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and the ability to propose amendments. Disagreements arose over whether the legislation should be passed simultaneously or separately, as well as how to address concerns related to CBDCs.

Representatives who voted "no" clarified that they support cryptocurrency regulation but believe the GENIUS Act must clearly prohibit CBDCs from proceeding.

Trump reiterated his administration's opposition to a Federal Reserve CBDC, citing his January executive order that prohibits its formation. House Speaker Mike Johnson applauded Trump's participation, saying it was critical to mobilizing support and passing cryptocurrency legislation during the Republican-led "Crypto Week."

Despite the initial setback, senior industry insiders pointed out that procedural failure is not uncommon—the GENIUS Act lost its first Senate vote before passing with bipartisan backing in June. On Wednesday, the House will revisit the bills. If passed, the proposal would be a big step toward setting clear US cryptocurrency rules before Congress's August recess.
